Starting point

Cattolica council has public lighting systems of various type and nature, located in: residential areas, tourist areas and craftsman’s areas.

The density of the light points is particularly high: a light point for every 4-5 inhabitants, against the national average of 9 inhabitants for every light point, for a total of 5,623 light points and 50 switchboards located over a 6 Km2 area.

There were two main requirements by the Council Administration:

  • to be able to modulate the lighting system, in compliance with the needs of every system, with variablity within days of the week and/or periods of the year
  • to efficiently manage maintenance, diminishing the impact with aimed interventions.

For these reasons, the Administration has opted for remote control, and MINOS SYSTEM has turned out to be the most advanced technological choice, responding efficiently to its expectations.

Technical characteristics

Installation of MINOS components on 20 public lighting systems, for a total of 2,385 light points.

The ANDROS (CPU, AL1, AL2) control/command cabinets have been installed on all the distribution panels while the light points have been equipped with the SYRA lamp control/command module. Mostly Syra 2/80, 2/250, 2/400 have been used when being installed in the access box of the pole, Syra F for fluorescent lamps and Syra 1000 for power lamps up to 1000W.

The net has been filtered using PHIL 30D in order to prevent disturbances generated by the systems and guarantee constant communication to power line carrier of the data.

Minos System remote control manages the following types of lamp:

  • SAP 70 - 400W
  • VM 125 - 400W
  • JM 70 - 400W
  • FL 23W
  • Alog 50-100W

The solution

Minos System saves on energy in four ways:

  • optimizing the cycle of normal operation thanks to the astronomical clock
  • carrying out flexible semi-nocturnal partialization by means of command power line carrier up to each single light point
  • eliminating dispersions for low factor power (and its relative problems)
  • reducing drastically the diurnal switching on, to search for out of order lamps.

Similarly, the anticipated knowledge of breakdowns of each light point and its location allow to efficiently organize maintenance operations, guaranteeing a high level lighting system service, while at the same time containing costs.

Thanks to the adoption of MINOS SYSTEM it has been possible to effectively save on energy, carrying out flexible partialization of the systems.

A number of light points are disactivated in those areas where a smaller flow of people and vehicles were verified, in relation to various days of the week and year:

  • tourist areas in November-April
  • handicraft areas during the week
  • residential areas in central nocturnal zones.

The utilization of Minos has given remarkable improvements to efficiency and maintenance intervention. Council staff assigned to remote control, communicate to the company that carries out maintenance, the necessary intervention, giving indications of every breakdown and their location.

In this way they are minimizing the impact of maintenance on the city, especially in the summer period, in which the tourist season makes movement and intervention more difficult.

Results

It turned out that total management of the city lights with Minos System has realized a medium energy saving of between 39.4%, with peaks of 44,4%.
