Municipality of Maria Enzersdorf (Austria)
Maria Enzersdorff, is an Austrian municipality with 8.000 inhabitants and has been the first European one to introduce Minos System for the remote control of all the public lighting installations of the city.
Purpose
The administration had the necessity to re qualify the old installations. The main purposes were the followings:
- renew of all the different luminary
- lighting quality and safety improvement
- energy costs reduction
- maintenance costs reduction
- high performing service through the introduction of a system allowing a digital control of the installations.
Solution
Minos System has represented the ideal solution to achieve the expected goals. 2.200 Syra have been installed in each single lighting point, and Andros modules over 52 electric cabinets . The technical department of the municipality together with Umpi engineers have analyzed area per area how to program via software the on/off of each single lighting point of the plant, in order to get the best result in terms of energy saving.
Results
The municipality, thanks to the smart programming of the lamps switching on/off in the different areas and to the requalification of the network, has obtained a 53% energy saving. Helmut Stohr, economy councilor said at that time: “We have a huge interest for the new lighting system installed in Maria Enzersdorf. This is a unique example in Austria of an intelligent management with reduced powered lamps, with a proper programming with faults automatic signalization, granting energy saving”.

Aset Spa
Aset Spa is the company exclusively managing the main services such as integrated water cycle, gas, environment and relative fields, public lighting and other services of public utility. Starting from 2001 the company has become a corporation providing services for 18 different municipalities, within Marche region. Since 2007 Fano City relies on Minos System to control its public lighting system.
Purpose
From July 2004, the Municipality of Fano has committed Aset to the public lighting integrated management service : 232 electric cabinets, and the switching on and off of more than 10 thousands lighting points dislocated in various Fano districts. In order to provide an efficient service to the citizens, Aset has set as first important purpose the implementation of a remote management system, capable to optimize energy and maintenance costs, automatically preventing the citizens claiming calls, due to blackout or lamps off.
Solution
Aset has chosen Minos System, upon market analysis and the comparison of the existing solutions.
The first installation has been done in 2007. After the first positive notices, Aset has fitted 136 Andros units for the cabinet control, 985 Syra for the control over each single lighting point mainly displaced on the touristic and artistic part of the city, and an IOS central server equipped with Mino X supervisor software for the remote management of the public lighting installation.
Results
Minos System has proved to be the ideal solution to reach the pre set results. In fact thanks to the punctual lamps switching on and off through the software programming of the astronomical clock we have assisted to an energy reduction and to an elimination of the claiming calls for blackout and lamps off. Minos system has permitted a yearly energy saving of 30% in the installation adopting the system. «The goal –explains Giorgio Garofalo, Aset Spa public lighting responsible- is to provide an efficient and smart public lighting service for all the different area of the city, with a particular attention to the historical, artistic and touristic sites. Another important purpose is the optimization of the lighting flux and the electric energy consumption, in compliance with the norms and dispositions tending to reduce the lighting pollution. The answer is UMPI remote management system, enabling Energy saving and improving the users customer satisfaction » Close. |

Municipality of Fara Gera D’Adda
Fara Gera d'Adda is a small municipality with 7.847 inhabitants close to Bergamo. Since 2006 they control the city public lighting system through Minos System.
Purpose
The administration had the need to modernize the obsolete public lighting network no longer compliant to the norms. The aim was to install new lighting body fixtures together with an innovative remote management system allowing energy saving and optimizing the maintenance interventions.
The solution
Andros modules have been installed in the 7 main distribution cabinets (power supplying the 95,4% of the lighting points) and Syra in the 1.061 lighting points, subdivided as follows: 752 l.p. equipped with flux reduction devices, 309 l.p. with switching on/off devices. All the plants are remotely controlled through the web oriented IOS supervisor server easily accessible via Internet.
Results
Minos System has enabled a 43% energy saving just upon 1 year from its introduction. This result together with the new public lighting network project realized by Umpi have granted to Fara Gera d’Adda the “Save The Sky Light pollution Free” award in 2007. This award has been given by Cielobuio “Dark Sky” association for the commitment to preserve dark and stellar sky, protecting the nightly environment through a rational use of energy and pursuing nightly quality light. Municipality of San Giovanni Persiceto
San Giovanni in Persiceto is a municipality with 26.492 inhabitants close to Bologna. Since 2003 they introduced Minos System to manage and control the public lighting installation. In a short interview, Marco Resca, public lighting responsible, explains us all the advantages of using Minos System in their installations.
Which is the main requirement for the municipality in order to manage the public lighting?
The main necessity for a public administration owing the installations, is:
- to keep the installations efficient with reduced cost
- guarantee the safety for the users and staff people dedicated to the ordinary and extraordinary maintenance, through a periodical functional check over the installations and its lighting points, and all over the components as well.
- check, verify and approve all the interventions to be compliant with the technical regulations (CEI Norms) and regional and National legislations and enlargement and realization of new private installations (Particular plans).
Why Minos System?
The system showed all the technical and operational characteristics allowing the control all over the components (lamps, regulation and command devices), being the essential elements of the plants. Moreover the system showed to be able to control the ordinary maintenance interventions (lamp off, flashing lamp, lamp with no power, broken capacitor ….). The administration set to get to a punctual management control by using Minos System: more than detecting and signalizing the faults, the system consents to record all the events as well, including the working hours of each lamp, allowing a prompt and correct programmed replacement. We started in 2003 with the first installations and we are going to cover the all public lighting network of the city in 2010. 5.053 Syra modules have been fitted to control each single lighting point and 46 Andros modules for the electric cabinets. We have also installed 2 IP cameras, a meteo station and a digital signage panel without adding any new cable, but just exploiting the power line technology features: keep the installation power supplied during the day without switching on the lights and therefore transforming the lighting network in an extended LAN. Cameras have been installed to guarantee the safety and therefore to monitor the area close to the railways station and these same cameras are managed by the municipality maintenance service together with the police. The meteo station is useful to prevent any possible inconvenience to the circulation, due to bad atmospheric conditions and the informing display could be used just to provide emergency signalizations (ex: ice on the streets).
Which are the results achieved ?
The results achieved are really remarkable. Minos System has given us the possibility to optimize the maintenance interventions thanks to an immediate fault signalization and to the installation status constant control, eliminating in this way all the citizens claims. Moreover it has enhanced a flexible programming of each single lighting point concerning the on/off and reduction function. Another important advantage of this system has surely been the possibility to remotely control the installation through an easy and quick internet connection. Having the IOS server connected on the network it’s possible to have the control over the installation through the Minos X supervisor software that can be easily visualized from any simple internet browser. We can openly say that Minos has created a new communication network providing various and important services for the citizens (safety, digital signage, meteo stations), avoiding expensive and additional cablings. The final purpose is to use the public lighting network as a smart infrastructure enabling the constant communication with the citizens. We got a 40% energy saving on the installations upon one year of Minos.
